On the elementary school level:
1. Greet parent and check initial
registration documentation.
2. Review the Home Language Survey included on Cobb
County Elementary registration forms.
The home language survey includes
the following three questions:
- What
language(s) did the student first learn to speak?
- What
language(s) does the student speak at home?
- What
language(s) does the student speak most often?
If Home Language Survey
indicates language other than English:
The
ESOL Lead Teacher must be informed of new ELL student’s arrival for review and further testing, if applicable. The student may be placed in age-appropriate class unless U.S. school transcript or report card
indicates otherwise.
3. Local school ESOL teacher or other authorized school staff determines whether to administer the W-APT. If English is indicated on all lines with another language, the ESOL teacher must contact home to determine if the extent of knowledge of language other than English warrants W-APT administration. If a language other than English appears solely as an answer to one of the questions, the ESOL teacher should administer the W-APT. (If you are unsure as to whether or not the W-APT should be administered, contact your District Lead ESOL teacher for guidance.
If W-APT scores
indicate ESOL program eligibility. The local school ESOL teacher is responsible for the following:
1. Complete
Initial ESOL Referral Form.
2. Complete
Parental Notification of English
Development Program in appropriate language.
3. If
parent requests a waiver, complete ESOL
Waiver form.
4. Place
original Initial Referral Form with
original W-APT score sheet summary (and
ESOL Waiver form if applicable) in permanent
folder; retain copy of both documents for ESOL records; send copy of both documents
to IWC.
5. Schedule
student for appropriate classes.
