Portuguese Learning Opportunities

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION – MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE

The ESOL Division, in conjunction with the Portuguese Language School at Middlebury College (Vermont), has reserved a limited number of seats for summer language instruction in Portuguese. Participants must apply directly for admission into the summer language program for Portuguese language study at Middlebury College. Additionally, participants must complete an application for summer study and tuition reimbursement from the ESOL Division.  The Language School Director for Middlebury College must approve all applicants for admission into the Middlebury program. Acceptance into the CCSD program does not guarantee acceptance into Middlebury and vice versa. The initial application fee to Middlebury College is the responsibility of the applicant.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to read, write, and speak (communicate) in another Romance Language (Spanish, Italian, French, Romanian, or Latin) so that the acquisition of Portuguese will be at the intermediate or advanced level by the end of the summer. Additionally, the ideal candidate will work in a Cobb County School where the acquisition of Portuguese will enhance the educator’s ability to assist ESOL immigrant students. Participation is open to administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists and other certified / classified school system employees who work directly with Portuguese speaking immigrant students. This project is made possible from grants awarded to the CCSD by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of English Language Acquisition in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Education and the LUSO American Foundation. Participants will receive a full tuition scholarship and an airline ticket for travel to Middlebury College, Vermont. This is an intensive language immersion program and participants must commit for the duration of the five week session. Moreover, participants must agree to meet on-line and for three intensive weekends during Fall Semester, 2008.

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION – BRAZIL

The ESOL Division invites participants to apply for a summer Portuguese language and cultural immersion experience in Salvador, Brazil. The project will be under the direction of Dr. Lucia Ribeiro who is a native speaker of both Spanish and Portuguese. Dr. Ribeiro currently serves as the International Welcome Center Coordinator and ESOL teacher trainer for the Cobb County School District. This project is made possible from a

grant awarded to the CCSD by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of English Language Acquisition in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Education. The ideal candidate will work in a Cobb County School where the acquisition of Portuguese will enhance the educator’s ability to assist ESOL immigrant students. Participation is open to administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other certified / classified school system employees who work directly with Portuguese speaking immigrant students. This is an intensive language immersion program and participants must commit for the duration of the program session. Moreover, participants must agree to meet on-line and for two additional sessions during Fall 2008 at a CCSD approved location for debriefing and discussion.

Spanish Learning Opportunities

SPANISH LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION – Guadalajara, MEXICO

The ESOL Division invites participants to apply for a summer Spanish language and cultural immersion experience in Guadalajara, México. The project will be under the direction of Dr. Lucia Ribeiro and other ESOL Division employees. The ideal candidate will work in a Cobb County School where the acquisition of Spanish will enhance the educator’s ability to assist ESOL immigrant students. Participation is open to administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other certified / classified school system employees who work directly with Spanish speaking immigrant students. This is an intensive language immersion program and participants must commit for the duration of the program session. Moreover, participants must agree to meet on-line and for two additional sessions during Fall 2008 at a CCSD approved location for debriefing and discussion.

SPANISH EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM SHADOWING – Matahuala, MEXICO

The ESOL Division invites participants to apply for a summer Spanish language and educational system shadowing program for language, culture, and school shadowing experiences in Matahuala, Mexico.  The project will be under the direction of Ms. Patrice Perugini-Hosmer, IWC Student Advisor / Counselor.  The ideal candidate will work in a Cobb County School and have a working knowledge of Spanish. The candidate should be able to hold “intermediate” level conversations but the acquisition of additional Spanish will enhance the educator’s ability to assist ESOL immigrant students. Participation is open to administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other certified / classified school system employees who work directly with Spanish speaking immigrant students. This is an intensive language immersion program with an embedded job shadowing component which will allow participants to gain a better understanding of international educational programs.  Participants must commit for the duration of the program session; moreover, participants must agree to meet on-line and for two additional sessions during Fall 2008 at a CCSD approved location for debriefing and discussion.

French Learning Opportunity

FRENCH LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION – Montreal, CANADA

The ESOL Division invites participants to apply for a summer French language and cultural immersion experience in Montreal, Canada. The project will be under the direction of the International Welcome Center and a CCSD certified French teacher.  The ideal candidate will work in a Cobb County School where the acquisition of French will enhance the educator’s ability to assist ESOL immigrant French speaking students from locations in Africa and the Caribbean. Participation is open to administrators, teachers, counselors,

social workers, psychologists, and other certified / classified school system employees who work directly with immigrant students. This is an intensive language immersion program and participants must commit for the duration of the program session. Moreover, participants must agree to meet on-line and for two additional sessions during Fall 2008 at a CCSD approved location for debriefing and discussion.

Korean Learning Opportunity

KOREAN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION-Seoul, KOREA

The ESOL Division invites participants to apply for a summer Korean language and cultural immersion experience in Seoul, Korea. The project will be under the direction of Mr. James Sheppard, CCSD Korean Facilitator. The ideal candidate will work in a Cobb County School where the acquisition of Korean will enhance the educator’s ability to assist ESOL immigrant students. Participation is open to administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other certified / classified school system employees who work directly with Korean speaking immigrant students. This is an intensive language immersion program and participants must commit for the duration of the program session. Moreover, participants must agree to meet on-line and for two additional sessions during Fall 2008 at a CCSD approved location for debriefing and discussion.
