PLAZA COMUNITARIA FACT SHEET
What is a Plaza Comunitaria?
The Plaza Comunitaria is a program developed by the Mexican government and provided free by the Mexican Consulate, to offer adult Spanish speakers the opportunity to begin, continue or improve their education, in Spanish. Upon completion of a program, students receive a certificate from the Mexican Ministry of Education.
There are Plazas Comunitarias in Mexico and in the United States. If the Plaza Comunitaria students move, they can continue their education at another Plaza, whether in Mexico or the United States.
What is offered at a Plaza Comunitaria?
- Alfabetización (Literacy)
- Primaria (Grades 1st - 6th)
- Secundaria (Grades 7th - 9th)
- Computer classes
- English classes
- Courses to improve parenting skills and job preparedness
For Primaria and Secundaria, the students are given a placement test.
- The courses are online, so once they know what they need to take, they can come to the Plaza Comunitaria or do it from a place where they have access to the Internet (home, public library, etc.). This flexibility allows them to study in their free time. Tutoring is provided at the Plaza Comunitaria.
Currently, Cobb County School District has Plazas Comunitarias in the following schools:
- Belmont Hills Elementary School – in Smyrna
- Pine Mountain Middle School – in Kennesaw
- Sprayberry High School – in Marietta
The Plaza Comunitaria at Sprayberry HS is the most recent addition.
These are some of the benefits of having a Plaza Comunitaria:
- Parents learn academic content and vocabulary in their first language (Spanish) and this supports their English language learning.
- Parental involvement in the school is increased.
- Parents acquire better academic skills to help their children.
- The parents’ self-esteem improves.
- Children begin to show more respect for their parents.
- Parents and children understand that learning is a lifelong process.

¿Qué es una Plaza Comunitaria?
La Plaza Comunitaria es un programa desarrollado por el gobierno de México y provisto de manera gratuita a través del Consulado de México para ofrecer a los hispanoparlantes adultos la oportunidad de empezar, continuar o mejorar su educación, en español, siguiendo el programa educativo mexicano. Al terminar un programa, los educandos reciben un certificado de la Secretaría de Educación Pública de México.
Hay Plazas Comunitarias en México y en los Estados Unidos. Si los educandos se mudan a otro lugar, pueden continuar su educación en otra Plaza, ya sea en México o en los Estados Unidos.
¿Qué se ofrece en una Plaza Comunitaria?
- Alfabetización

- Clases de computación
- Clases de inglés
- Cursos para mejorar sus habilidades parentales y su preparación para el trabajo
A los candidatos de Primaria y Secundaria se les administra una prueba de colocación.
Los cursos son en línea. Así, una vez que los educandos saben qué es lo que tienen que acreditar pueden estudiar en la Plaza Comunitaria o hacerlo desde un lugar en el que haya acceso a internet (casa, biblioteca pública, etc.). Esta flexibilidad les permite estudiar en su tiempo libre. En la Plaza Comunitaria se da tutoría.
Actualmente, el Distrito Escolar del Condado de Cobb tiene Plazas Comunitarias en las siguientes escuelas:
- Escuela Primaria Belmont Hills – en Smyrna
- Escuela Secundaria Pine Mountain – en Kennesaw
- Escuela Preparatoria Sprayberry – en Marietta
La Plaza Comunitaria en Sprayberry es nuestra adición más reciente.
Los siguientes son algunos de los beneficios de tener una Plaza Comunitaria:
- Los padres aprenden el contenido académico y el vocabulario en su lengua materna (español) y esto apoya su aprendizaje del idioma inglés.
- Se incrementa la participación parental en la escuela.
- Los padres adquieren mejores habilidades académicas para ayudar a sus hijos.
- La autoestima de los padres mejora.
- Los niños comienzan a mostrar más respeto hacia sus padres.
- Tanto los padres como los niños comprenden que el aprendizaje es un proceso que dura toda la vida.
