Some of our students, especially the newly arrived ESOL students, have very limited computer knowledge. Many have never used a computer until arriving to our schools! We must remind ourselves that we not only are language teachers, but tech teachers as well. A student who already lags behind his peers in language is even more at risk when he also lags behind in computer knowledge. To this end I am providing you with some links that I have found useful in teaching basic skills to newly arrived students who are limited English proficient.
My favorite site is BBC's Computer Tutor. This site provides a step by step video which allows for subtitles.
Vocabulary is always key. A great way to help your students is to teach them vocabulary. There are a couple of games, one on the British Council site and another on Cesar's English Page, have students drag pictures of computer stuff to the word.
Another site with an activity that is great for your Spanish speaking students is on the Activities for ESL Students page. This is a matching activity that matches the Spanish term with the English. Remember...do not expect your native speakers of Spanish many of our students with limited schooling
