Netiquette

"Netiquette" is the newly developed term for online etiquette. According to Wikipedia, it " is a catch-all term for the conventions of politeness and respect recognized on Usenet, in mailing lists, in live chat systems, and on other electronic forums such as Internet message boards."

This concept is an important one to teach our students...especially if we have them blogging or emailing as a part of our classroom instruction. I have created a Powerpoint that teachers can share with their students.

It's the Law!

So, you are now using technology and you have your students using technology, right? Well, better make sure that you are doing things legally or you may get caught by the copyright police! For an excellent explanation on the Fair Use Act, check out the video. Since Youtube is blocked, I have also included the video in mp4 format which will allow you to share the video with fellow teachers and students at school.

Cyberbullying

"Remember the human." One of the most essential rules of netiquette. It is much easier to post something about someone than it is to tell that same message to the person's face. Cyberbullying has been in the news quite a bit lately. In November 2007 thirteen year old Megan Meier committed suicide after receiving a number of cruel messages online. Currently seven states have passed cyberbullying legislation with more states to likely follow soon. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has national standards for technology in education for teachers, students and administrators. Their website has a wealth of resources for the classroom teacher.
